There are four main TBT free fouling control technologies currently available:

Biocidal:

–Self-polishing Copolymer (SPC)

–Hybrid SPC

–Controlled Depletion Polymer (CDP)

Foul Release

These technologies have :

 –Differing effects on roughness

–Differing abilities to resist fouling.

No Biocides

Low surface energy (surface tension)

Ultra-smooth, slippery surface

Chemically durable

A study was initiated to see whether the extra smoothness of theFoul Release coating Intersleek 700 reduces drag.

–Part 1: Using the Newcastle (UK) Towing Tank (40 m)

–Part 2: Using the Madrid (Spain) Towing Tank (320 m)

The drag of an uncoated Flat Plane was compared to the drag withthe following coatings: IntersmoothSPC (BiocidalAntifouling) Intersleek 700 (Foul Release)

The Newcastle test used a 2m x 1m Flat plane, up to 2 m/s, whereas the Madrid test used a 6m x 1m Flat Plane, at up to 8 m/s.

The roughness of the three surfaces was also compared.

Conclusions:

Roughness: The freshly applied Foul Release coating Intersleek 700 was smoother than the freshly applied SPC coating.

Drag: The freshly applied Foul Release coating Intersleek 700 gave less drag than the freshly applied SPC coating.
