SHIPBUILDING STEEL PLATES

As there are lot of shipbuilding steel plates producers we recommend to use this table as guidance. Consulting technical file from producer is compulsory when steel quality is critical.
Shipbuilding steels are of ordinary-strength or higher-strength specifications. All shipbuilding are engineered to be long-life shipbuilding steels. Classification societies may permit the use of other steels in shipbuilding, but usually discourage use of other types of steel and require more detailed engineering analysis. Ordinary-strength shipbuilding steels are classified in a number of grades A, B, D, E, DS, and CS. Certified steels are marked with the grade, the mark aspect depending on Classification society that made the certification of the batch. Yield point for ordinary-strength shipbuilding steels is 235Mpa (34,000psi) with some exemptions. Tensile strength (or UTS – ultimate tensile strength) of ordinary strength steels is between 400Mpa (58,000psi) and 520Mpa (75,400psi). Higher-strength shipbuilding steel are classified in six grades of two strengths, AH32, DH32, EH32, AH36, DH36, and EH36. The 32 grades have yield strength of 315Mpa (45,500psi) and tensile strength between 440Mpa (64,000psi) and 590Mpa (85,000psi). The 36 grades have yield strength of 355Mpa (51,000psi) and tensile strength between 490Mpa (71,000psi) and 620Mpa (90,000psi).
